The incumbent Assemblyman from PKR cum Penang Deputy Chief Minister 1 tendered his resignation to make way for a bye election. Mohd Fairus was in the midst of speculation that he had taken bribe from a quarry. The Anti Corruption Agency was hot on his heel. They even detained him at the Immigration checkpoint at Johore Baharu when Fairus entering
Once Fairus tendered his resignation BN had to face another bye election and the most feared challenger would be PKR. Penanti is one of the three constituents of Anwar’s Parliamentary playground. All of a sudden, the Anti Corruption Agency declared that there was no case against Fairus and Fairus could retract his resignation. Fairus stood his stand and a bye election had to proceed. What if Fairus did not resigned? The ACA would pursue the case, find him guilty and embarrass PKR to the nation. In this case Fairus had outsmarted BN. He embarrassed BN instead. The ACA cannot retract their declarations that Fairus is clean. BN walked off with their mouth opened.
BN was in dilemma. They were contemplating. To stand would be another loss to BN. Mahathir advised them to stand but Najib who just got his Premiership cannot afford another loss and backlash from the rakyat. Finally BN decided not to stand giving the excuse the bye election is only PKR plan propaganda. The Penanti bye election does not arise from the Constitution requirement. Penanti is not a safe place for BN. Najib lame excuse for not contesting the bye election is to save money for the country’s economic well being.
Nomination was held on 23 May 2009 and BN stayed away. Chicken!!!. My perception: BN is damn scared of a bye election. The rakyat is not supportive of their political ideology anymore. One clear indication when Manoharan one of Selangor Assemblyman detained under the Internal Security Act threatened to resign, he was released a week later. Here too, BN wanted to avoid a bye election and is a confirmed slaughterhouse. With the present fiasco BN had created in Perak the rakyat is just plain fed up to the bone and the consequences would be beyond redemption.
Unless BN do something miraculous before the 13 General Election, the sun would forever set upon them. Ask any non UMNo supporter and cronies in the streets, the answer is no no to UMNo.
